Programme overview

Want to know what it truly takes to make a book? This Pan Macmillan Career Insights Programme guides you through the entire publishing process.

What's included

Over eight key modules, you will explore the full lifecycle, understand the roles that drive success, and build the foundational knowledge required for a career in books and how to bring a creative product to life on a global scale.

This is Pan Macmillan

This introductory module establishes the foundation of Pan Macmillan. In this module, you will explore the company's history and values, meet the people behind the imprints, and learn about the teams that bring our books to life. By the end, you'll gain a deeper understanding of not just what we publish, but the values that drive us.

Developing a book

Every great book starts with an idea, but how does an idea develop into a book? In this module, you’ll explore how editors at Pan Macmillan find new voices, acquire titles, and shape stories through collaboration, creativity, and care. You’ll see how integrity guides decisions, and how Managing Editorial brings it all together.

Producing a book

In this module, you will first explore the creative process of Design, focusing on strategic cover creation and typesetting. Learn how aesthetic decisions are made to align with the market and enhance the reading experience. You will then move on to learning about the meticulous quality, sustainability, and accessibility standards the Production team manages to ensure a high-quality physical and digital product reaches readers globally.

Distributing a book

In this module, the focus shifts to the market. You will explore how the Sales, Marketing, Publicity, and Rights teams align their expertise to maximise a book's global reach. See how commercial teams utilise data-led strategy and powerful creative campaigns, working in alignment to drive market success and deliver titles to audiences worldwide.

Task

As we have seen, there are a variety of roles within publishing. This module will focus on a few optional tasks for you to complete to support your learning and get a better sense of the work Pan Macmillan do. You can do all of the tasks, or choose the one you are most interested in!

Employability skills

No matter where you see yourself working in the future, strong employability skills will help you get there. This module is all about the key skills that employers value – like teamwork, communication, and problem-solving – and how you can start developing them now. You’ll learn how these skills work together in real jobs, reflect on your own strengths, and make a plan to build the areas you want to improve.
